The John L. Ulch House
Description
The John L. Ulch House is a 1½-storey house built in the late Victorian era. The home’s historical value lies in its association with John Ulch, a local farmer and descendant of the earliest settlers to the area. The Ulch family in the Kingsville area can be traced to 1793. John Ulch was a blacksmith and later a farmer. He was known as the “Mayor of Bulgetown.” Bulgetown was the name given to the area from the corner of Division Road and the 4th Concession of Gosfield South because of the coincidence of a number of local women being pregnant at the same time.
Key heritage attributes include:
Locally produced brick with a stone foundation
First home in the area to use concrete instead of wood for the windows and doorsills
Narrow second floor windows on the front
Gingerbread on the original porch columns
Segmental arches on the windows
